High quality leather

The cow-hide is the traditional raw-material for mountain boots. It is a natural product with excellent qualities for comfort, softness, breathability, resistance and duration. If there is something which has always been a constant at Bestard over time, it has been our strict policy of always choosing only the absolutely best European hides from the most serious and prestigious European tanneries. This is one of the main secrets behind the characteristic high finish and quality of our boots.

The natural hide has a thickness of about 8mm. At the top of the hide, also called epidermis or grain level, fibres are tighter together and hence stronger, making the leather durable, sturdy and water- and weather resistant
According to the quality of each hide, it is split into different layers and submit to different treatments for getting its final qualities.

In our boots and shoes we use the following kind of leather:
  • Amfibic Full Grain leather
  • Nobuk leather
  • Split suede

  • Our leathers have a final thickness of:
  • 2,8-3,0 mm (Alpine Mountain-boots),
  • 2,2-2,8 mm (Trekking-and outdoor boots) and
  • 1,6-1,8 mm (low-cut shoes)

  • Regardless of type or end-use, all our leathers have been impregnated thoroughly for getting excellent water-repellent qualities.

    Amfibic full-grain leather

    It’s the most natural and original leather, where we have maintained and treated the exterior part of the cow-hide. Here, at the epidermis level, or grain, fibres are united very closely, making the leather more consistent, tough and resistant against water and cold.

    Nobuk leather

    Nubuk is derived from natural full-grain leather. The outer epidermal layer of natural leather is maintained because the fibres, or grain, are naturally very close-bonded. This gives the leather a tough and water resistant consistency, with natural insulation against the cold. In order to obtain the characteristic velvety suede effect of Nubuk leather, the natural grain is given a light sanding. This results in more breathable, supple leather with a better response to water-proofing agents but which retains the desirable characteristics of full-grain leather.

    Split suede

    Hide is usually split into several layers. The dermal layer just below the grain is the layer we cure for our split suede. We choose only the highest quality split leather, which has undergone sophisticated treatments to impart extra toughness and an extraordinarily fine finished surface. In its thinner versions, it is an excellent choice for breathable hiking and outdoor boots where lightness, flexibility and softness are a priority.

    For all our robust and tough Mountaineering and Trekking boots we only use extremely high quality split leather from the prestigious Perwanger tannery. Situated in the middle of the Tyrolean Alps, it has been manufacturing high quality leather since 1780, and has become a benchmark of what is today’s absolute best choice for mountain boots. Their process still uses artisan techniques, and each and every leather is submitted to strict quality controls at each working station during the complete process, in order to be sure they keep meet our demanding requirements of water-repellence, durability and high quality finish.

    KEVLAR ®

    Extremely strong and yet soft and light fabric containing a high percentage of KEVLAR® , an ultra-light aramid fibre. The advantages of incorporating Kevlar in our most sophisticated boots and shoes are several:
  • an incomparable combination of low weight and resistance to wear and tear;
  • breathable;
  • low absorption of humidity, and quick drying;
  • softness and a quick mould to the shape of the foot;
  • flexibility - avoiding pinching of the feet at the flex-points.
  • CORDURA ®

    A homologated synthetic textile with its natural appearance is famous for being extremely resistant to wear and tear, and for keeping its soft and comfortable look long after other conventional materials appear worn out and old. The advantages of using Cordura® in our boots are low weight and soft and flexible touch. It is breathable while also offering excellent water repellent qualities.

    AIR-MESH and MESH

    A highly breathable, lightweight material. Unlike many other, similar materials, the air-mesh we use in our uppers is also water-repellent and very resistant to abrasion.

    Hooks, eyelets, rings and brakes

    Quality hardware, such as hooks, brakes etc, is fundamentally important for security in the mountains. All hardware items used by Bestard ares made from corrosion resistant materials and are mounted on to the boots, one-by-one, with great care and precision. Thanks to the low friction caused by our hooks, the laces run easily and abrasion is reduced to a minimum.

    Most of our boots for High Mountain and Advanced Trekking are fitted with the sophisticated easy running “Quick Lock” system, where stainless-steel balls provide a totally frictionless run for the lace, and two clinch-rings easily fasten or unfasten it. In practice, this system allows the user to tighten or loosen the boot with one single pull, eliminating the need to pull up the lace at each d-ring pair.

    The Quick-Lock clinch-rings, standard in most of our models, also allow the user to regulate the tightness of the lacing in the leg without changing the tightness over the foot.

    Laces

    All our laces have been manufactured and treated to surpass the highest standards of water repellence and resistance to abrasion. This way we make sure that they will stand many years of use in the hardest of conditions, and that they don’t absorb water.

    Threads

    We always use the best thread available on the market, both in terms of strength and resistance to wear and tear. For total security, we always use double-seam stitching for the critical parts. All our threads are treated to repel the ingress of moisture from capillary effect.
